American Rifleman magazines (vanity)

Posted on 07/31/2016 7:39:03 AM PDT by OttawaFreeper

I have my great grandfather's flintlock rifle as part of my gun collection. Am looking to collect American Rifleman magazines that deal with such a topic. The flint action has a "Joseph Gilcher" stamped on it and I know that that was a commonly made action back in the mid nineteenth century. I know you can buy off of Ebay, but am curious to know what specific issues I could order. I have one from March 1982 that has articles about Liberty Cap Contract Muskets and Christopher Hirsch's making of a custom flintlock for President Reagan.

TOPICS: History; Miscellaneous
KEYWORDS: banglist; flintlock

Seems like you could email the NRA about this. Perhaps they have an index of issues and could tell you which ones include material that would fit your criteria.

Google “Joseph Gilcher gunmaker “ and it will bring up quite a few hits on him.

You might also check the NRA’s ARMS AND THE MAN series of magazines.

Contact Jim Supica, the director of their firearms museum.

He’s a great guy.

My great-great grandfather worked on the river as a
lights keeper, maintaining and fueling the shore lights.
He carried a Smith & Wesson revolver from the early
1900’s. - It still fires smooth and is light.

That river attracted a lot of yahoos who would just as
soon shoot someone, rob them and leave them to rot on
the river bank.

I don’t want to shoot nobody; but if these damned Jihadists
leave their numerous training camps and come out here
crawling through the woods in their Jihadist outfits;
if Dub don’t get ‘em; me and Fang WILL get ‘em.

An early model S & W hand ejector? What caliber? 6” barrel? I love revolvers, carry one all the time. I’m just curious.

Yes. 6” barrel. Lightweight. - My gg grandfather carried it
in the early 1900’s. It may have been produced back in the
late 1800’s. - Daddy used to pour his own bullets one at a
time at the kitchen table. I’m sure the mold came from the
same source. - I just turned 70 yrs. old 7/29/46; so lots of
water has gone under that bridge after all these years.-
My gg grandfather worked for the federal lighthouse group
(don’t know what it was called exactly). He lived in a
little town on the Tennessee River; a rough crowd hung
around the river back in those days - probably still do.
People now are fairly spoiled. If there’s not a pizza
hanging off the table at every meal; they think they are
deprived. I grew up on beans and potatoes. (I’ve sure made
up for it since I grew up.) Fang & I have been married
almost 53 years; both too stubborn to give up!! He likes
the crossbow and his shotgun; but I am not stout enough to
deal with that crossbow.
