Culture change? Top cop swiftly pulls badges of officers in shooting

The confrontation between O'Neal and the officers happened about 7:30 p.m. Thursday after officers tried to stop O'Neal as he drove a Jaguar that had reportedly been stolen in Bolingbrook. As O'Neal drove north in the 7400 block of South Merrill Avenue, he struck a responding police SUV and a parked car, police sources told the Tribune. Two officers opened fire as O'Neal continued into the 7300 block of Merrill. O'Neal then collided with another police SUV, causing significant damage, and fled from the car. A third officer chased him and shot him behind a nearby residence, the sources said.

O'Neal, of the 1700 block of East 70th Street, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he died shortly after 9 p.m.

“While these cases are rare”

Thing is, too many FReepers feel they are not rare and are in line with BLM accusations.

Police are only legally permitted to use the force necessary to subdue the threat. If there is no lethal threat, then lethal force is excessive.

That is not true. Cops are permitted to use deadly force in certain situations to prevent escape. In this case, if an officer was hit, or officers reasonably thought an officer was hit by the car, they would likely be justified in shooting the driver as he drove away. But your statement is emblematic of the real problem here. People that don't know what they are talking about, post things like this and other people read it and believe it resulting in anger based on misinformation.

I wonder if it was a black officer that did the shooting. If so, then in Chicago a black on black incident is the norm.......no?

Then why second guess police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, and his 30 years of experience as a cop? He says you're wrong about the facts. Biased much?

Wait - whut? It looks like there are some cops you might trust - but still all without a hint of on-the scene experience or knowing what political pressures might be involved. Once again - help preserve your own ability to reach out and amaze so many - Donate to FR

So, is your argument that the cops should have just let him go when he bailed out of the apparently stolen car and ran?

I fail to see how Down’s Syndrome has the slightest relevance to how police are supposed to respond to a criminal who is, yes, ramming cars with a car.

Why you think it is not “ramming” to intentionally hit a car in your path is for you to ponder. If the collision is intended by the driver, it is ramming. That is the definition of ramming a car with a car.

Glad you think you have graduated so far beyond appreciation of the work of police officers. It doesn’t sound to me like you’ve learned anything, but go along with your fantasy world.

The facts say Paul thought it worth his life, it is Superintendent Eddie Johnson who disagrees with Paul.

The clerical duty is purely political to appease the mob.

They will make it so cops won’t do anything to protect the public especially if blacks are involved.

Except by not pursuing the criminal, he remains free to commit other crimes. Perhaps he has a kidnapped child in the trunk. Perhaps he’s looking for an untraceable ride to do a drive-by.

Many on FR (rightly) blame the administration’s lax immigration policy when an illegal immigrant kills an innocent. Had the INS done its job, that innocent might be alive today. Yet here you are advocating the exact same thing as the Obama admin: just let the criminal go and hope for the best. Sure, 75% of the criminals might not commit another crime with the car. But what do you say to the grieving family of the victims of the other 25%?

Bryan, you just made excuses for everyone of those people resisting arrest. Making excuses is enabling them.

When the officers say “stop” you are required by law to stop, any action after that is resisting arrest.

Down’s Syndrome doesn’t, black males don’t matter, all that matters is that if you don’t fight or resist you will almost certainly be alive to tell about it.

Or you could live like the rest of and stop breaking laws.

He was driving like a lunatic in a stolen car, hit two other vehicles including a cop car, took off on foot - in short eluding police by threatening lives of cops and citizens. He was behaving like a dangerous criminal. He deserved getting shot and I don’t always side with coos. This time they were right.

What could possibly justify shooting an unarmed, fleeing suspect?

I remember when "Stop or I will shoot" actually meant something, now it is just a prompt to run.

thou shall not run from the cops

Why not? You might get away, if you don't the cop will likely be in more trouble than you are.

>>I bet you an adult beverage the police did not park in her way and remain in their cars, but knowing this driver was ramming vehicles, this driver was a deadly threat to not only them but the public as well.

As I stated, I listened to it on the radio. There were calls to “put your car in front of her” followed by “she hit him.”

I started out as a vehicle driving erratically at 2 am in a part of town that is mostly industrial. They shot her once she was boxed in and couldn’t move anymore, so her “weapon” was neutralized.

>>Glad you think you have graduated so far beyond appreciation of the work of police officers.

I appreciate their work, just as I appreciate the work of utility workers, firefighters, nurses, and teachers. They provide a service for pay under difficult circumstances.

Unlike the others, they only have to do it for 20 years and then they get a fat retirement. That is their thanks for a job well done (or at least a job done).

She was still a threat if she had not turned off the car. Did the driver have a weapon? Who knows? Betting your life? Did the driver hide her hands? Did the driver reach for something?

Parking a patrol car in front of a reckless driver is done and the driver of the patrol car gets out and away from the vehicle.

You painted a picture of what you heard, not what you saw.

And, again, DS has nothing to do with the decision to open fire on a vehicle ramming cars and being driven recklessly.

It appears you are inadvertently arguing otherwise by using the liberal tactic of pulling on heart-strings by focusing on information discovered after the fact as opposed to the here-and-now facts and threats the police were dealing with.

You have your mind made up, I get that, and no matter what logic and fact I present will make a difference, so we should let this go.

There wasn't any nuance or doubt - the unarmed perp was shot in the back and killed. The police superintendent, with 30 years experience, said there appeared to be a violation of police procedure and pulled the involved officers from duty. End of subject. Your bias is noted.

He was armed with a stolen automobile that he used to crash into several other automobiles including police cruisers. The dead perp was a deadly menace.

Your numbskullery is duly noted!

I remember when shooting a suspect was a last resort and not the first or second one.
