The teen shot and killed by a Jefferson Parish deputy sheriff in a Metairie warehouse late Tuesday (July 26) had attempted to fire his weapon but the gun may have malfunctioned, Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said in a press conference.
"Devon Martes tried to kill one of my officers," Normand said, referring to the 17-year-old man who was killed. "Devon Martes is not the victim. The victim in this case is Deputy Dave Dalton."
The shooting took place just before midnight at 4013 N. Interstate 10 Service Road inside a warehouse used to sort and distribute newspapers to dealers for delivery. A video of the incident was later released by Advance Central Services-Southeast, a sister company of NOLA Media Group, which operates NOLA.com and publishes The Times-Picayune.
The video shows Martes raising what appears to be a gun and twice pointing it to the deputy before the officer shoots him.
