In their defense at least fourteen of them were clearly afraid of being called bad names if they were to offend the Muslim by preventing him from hacking people to death.

If the attacker is 5 feet away, adrenalized, and swinging...while passengers were still seated, many asleep, and trying to process things...it is easy to understand their confusion.
