Sounds like an assassination. Most killers (I would think) don’t lie in wait at a public convenience store for just anybody. This doesn’t justify murder, of course, but it may go toward explaining what just happened.
Did the dad inadvertenly ‘diss’ some street hood the day before? I tend to think it was more serious than that. Was the dad affiliated with a gang, or had he ever been so, perhaps while incarcerated. Was there an unpaid debt?

Yeah, I'd say there's a 100% chance this was a former lover situation of some sort, especially in the murder of the kid. What a psychopath.
