It's worse scenario pilots undergo recurrent training in the simulator, in the case of those E-2C pilots I'm pretty sure they've practiced that worse case scenario in simulator. E-2C making carrier landing at final the throttles and flaps at takeoff mode so just in case they missed arresting cable or it snapped they can easily abort landing with good momentum the best they can, sure the two buys get medals for saving the plane.
