A bunch of grapes has fetched a record price at an auction in Japan, where the fruit is considered a status symbol.

The bunch of about 30 grapes of the Ruby Roman variety sold for 1.1m yen (£8,350) – about £270 a grape. Each grape is roughly the size of a ping pong ball.

The grapes are grown in Ishikawa prefecture, and to qualify for the Ruby Roman designation, each grape must weigh at least 20g and have a sugar content of at least 18%.

Wasn’t there a Peanuts strip where Lucy and Linus argue whether it’s a “group of grapes” or a “bunch of grapes”?

Each bunch of grapes gets its own white paper hat.

Might as well. The current Pope is almost as fruity.

The Japanese seem to be the craziest of the Orientals....
And, I for the most part, see most Orientals as way out there.

I’ve seen these grapes at Sam’s Club for a $1.99 a pound.

Good thing these folks have never been over exposed to radiation. They would probably mutate towards the bizarre.

In the high-end department stores, it’s not unusual to see apples for 3000 yen or melons for 8000 yen. However, the fruit is perfect in appearance, intended as a gift, perhaps.

The seeds from those grapes may objectively be worth a lot of money, though it would be better to start with more than the amount from one bunch.

Yes, and a gift that cannot be returned or regifted. The Japanese keep “score” on these kinds of things.

Is that a raspberry beret?

The kind you find in a second-hand store?
