A college kid had his foot blown off in Central Park on Sunday after stepping on what appeared to be a firecracker, police sources said.
Connor Golden, 18, was climbing on rocks near east 60th Street and Fifth Avenue with his two buddies — Thomas Hinds, 20, and Matthew Stabile, 18 — when he stepped on the explosive object at around 11 a.m., the sources said.
“His foot was mutilated,” said Hinds, who was spoke to The Post from the 19th Precinct on Sunday afternoon.
“I was walking in front of him and suddenly heard this extremely loud explosion directly behind me. When I turned around, I saw Connor lying there, his foot completely gone. It was insane. He was moaning and saying, ‘Get help

Have read terrorists at times use “Mother of Satan” explosives. Also called TATP. They are notorious for blowing up in manufacture of the chemicals.

large firework mishaps can and do kill people. What we are talking about here, is a very small device that was supposedly a homemade firecracker. A firecracker, and a firework are very different. Firecrackers are designed to make a loud bang. By all accounts this was described as a (loud/big) explosion.
Interesting they say used by the shoe bomber. can’t put anything big in a shoe.
Not to be gross about it, but the pictures at the NY Post are large good quality images. You can see actually part of his foot (toes and ball of foot) are still intact, but the rest is really blown to bits. The shot from above you can see the foot is backwards and way out of line, so it was pretty much blown apart, the ankle and lower leg destroyed. You could set off 100 firecrackers next to someone and not do that kind of damage.
I suppose this is another case of we’ll never know what really happened.
Honestly i dont know. Fuses on the larger ones may be able to keep lit even if wet. Some are made to operate even if they et wet.
It just depends what it is and how its protected.

This was clearly high explosives.
Was it home brewed? (Mother of Satan?) Possibly, but may be not.
Another possibility, it could have been a detonator. they are small and contain HE. This type of damage is possible from some detonators.

That’s exactly what it sounds like. A typical anti-personnel mine blows off a foot or lower leg.
It could have been a Russian popper. They are made out of plastic and real small. They used to drop them out of planes in Afghanistan and just seed an area with them. Kids would pick them up and take them home and play with them til suddenly boom! Syria and Libya buy from Russia. Who knows whats warehoused in those two countries.
Very possible and the government would not want that known it it was.

It says sold out because it is listed for info only ‘not for sale’. But it does go to show that there are any number of ways a small powerful explosive device could be made and disguised as something else.

Think about it. If it was his “firecracker” why would it be in a bag? Would he really try to light his wizz bang super cool homemade firecracker while it was in a bag? No, common sense says he would light it outside of the bag.
Now lets just say he did light it while in the bag (not sure how you would do that but lets just say he did). Then why step on it? I assume the thought is it didnt go off so he wanted to extinguish it? But if it was in a paper bag how would you know it went out?
Next if it was his and all the above happened how come the NYPD bomb squad said it had been there for a few days?
Lastly, why oh why would the NYPD bomb squad say that it was a pressure switch activated explosive made by someone with decent chemistry knowledge.
So yes, provided the above information, I would take your bet.
