Some are reduced to living day to day after years of reduced economic circumstance depletes their savings.
That's a very good point. I equate that to the argument I constantly make about the old honest people still living in the city of Detroit to the fools who say they should just move out.
Their home are worthless on the market and they can't afford to flee their plight........They're hopelessly trapped.
No job? No retirement? No family? No friends? No mentors? No counselors? NO one?
VERY sad indeed.
I always believed that SOMEWHERE along the line those folks did what they WANTED to, rather than what they SHOULD have done. ESPECIALLY in this country.
"Deferred gratification" wasn't a way they cared to live.
No one has to "fall through the cracks" in this country unless s/he INSISTS on it.
A house becomes a boat anchor in areas experiencing economic decline. Can’t sell it, couldn’t do much with the proceeds even if you could sell it. Walking on a mortgage doesn’t just leave you with damaged credit in most states, you’ll be left with a judgement for the balance owed above and beyond the sale price at foreclosure auction. So, what do people do, when they’re trapped like this? Just keep putting one foot in front of the other, hoping for better, but it never comes. Make do with part time jobs, end up on some form of public assistance out of sheer necessity, slowly spiraling the drain. I have a great deal of sympathy for these people, it could easily be many of us. I see it happening out in the small towns away from cities even here.
I hope they move away. I don’t think rebuilding after any natural disaster should be allowed. Look at the coasts, we are constantly paying these folks to rebuild only to pay them again the next hurricane. It is insane. I think one pay out only if you decide to rebuild in same area. It is getting expensive.
You make a very compassionate statement which finally exemplifies what this site and compassionate conservatism is all about.........
Unfortunately there are many purists here who will likely swoop in and start the flame war. I'm going to ignore them.........
“People of little means to start with have been treated very badly by trade policy and environmental regulation in West Virginia. “
Excuses don’t fly. If you are insured, your insurance company is legally obliged to repay for your house and pay for your temporary housing. If you are not insured, don’t expect the taxpayers to foot your bill. Act responsibly and you are not at a mercy of others.
“You seem to be advocating just leaving them to their own devices”
Not just them, but everybody. You make exceptions for “victims” of disasters and you will have rules for victims of past injustices, whether real or imaginary. I just don’t want taxpayers’ hard earned money going to the takers.
Not that I’m aware of...still waiting. My county was one of the hardest hit with 10+ inches of rain in a span of 2-6 hours, they’re now saying. Thank the Lord I built on high ground! Some of my friends and co-workers weren’t so lucky. :o/ Honestly, I think I’d rather not hear a word out of his (Barry’s) mouth. It wouldn’t be genuine. He’s already mad at the state for not voting for him.
