The new trend is no longer 22-26 episode per season shows on over-air networks. It's 9-12 episode per season shows with much higher production values and less censorship (Breaking Bad, Orange is the new Black, Game of Thrones, House of Cards, and so on). Indeed, movie stars are now participating in these new series because it gives them lots of work and a very nice income. Indeed, AMC made itself prominent because of the success of this type of TV series.

It also makes it difficult to maintain any sense of continuity when an episodic series takes a 6-month break in the middle of the narrative. It’s hard to recapture some of the subtleties.
