you are correct; however American history sometimes has an asterisk to unusual things. David Pierce Atchison was actually acting President for less than a day in the 19th century. Seems the inauguration day (March 4th then) fell on a Sunday, and the incoming elected President refused to be sworn in on that day. Subsequently Atchison served as President for a day until such time that the new President was sworn in. He actually was probably one of the best CIC’ s we ever had, as he slept during his short tenure and did not cause any uproar during his term. Oh, for the good old days!
