"12 gauge? A shotgun?" Some say a 12 Ga. short barrel riot gun is the best for home defense. Before my tragic FReeper boating accident I had a couple I kept ready in the home. Waking up in the dead of night a wide pattern of lead shot can compensate for tired eyes and less-than sharp reflexes.
