When Reid, Pelosi and Obama controlled the House, Senate and White House why didn't they pass an "assault" weapons ban??
the dirty little secret is that they didn’t have the votes then, either.
Because they don’t care about actually banning guns. They care about leveraging the side effects of fighting over it: it’s a great issue for when they _can’t_ pass it, demonizing the R majority and whipping up support for replacing them. Then when in the majority, the issue is conveniently forgotten, not wanting to lose that tool and not wanting to suffer the massive losses that follow enacting a ban: pass a ban, lose the majority.
and/or
Because they don’t want to deal with the enforcement of a ban. 49 dead from a terrorist is useful propaganda material. A million mad-as-hell otherwise law abiding citizens is bad news. Numerous bloody shootouts with those resisting enforcement (see Waco siege) is a political nightmare. Sparking an actual civil war, with 3%ers actively killing prominent Leftists, is the political Armageddon they literally can’t survive.
Stimulus cash.
Then Obamacare was the big priority.
Lost the house after 2 years.
Alex, the answer is why would the rats focus on ‘healthcare’ leaving immigration reform and gun control on the perimeter? The plans laid down called for certain items at certain times.
That is why Cap and Trade and gun control failed - because not enough Republicans signed on to make it a "bipartisan" bill. The Dems had the votes to pass it on their own.
Reid didn't want to lose rural votes.
No clue what was up with Pelosi.
Not quite, but unlike health care they actually care that Republicans are a public part of passing gun bans. So they did not pass a gun ban for the same reason they waited until the Republicans were in control of the House to have the Bush tax cuts expire (they were extended with very few changes when the Dems controlled both houses).
Bingo.
