Grew up in MA, this is a rough area.
I have driven by there off and on for over fifty years. I could walk there from where I grew up. I thought that this area was on the way back up.
It was a great neighborhood until the libs decided to “improve” it with diversification.
This is a great book about the shame of it all.

Yup ... grew up in W. Roxbury....watched the Dem hacks destroy neighborhoods. The Boston school system was the nation’s finest public system, and they destroyed it.
Remember the Little Brown Jug, corner of Blue Hill Ave and Morton Street? We used to hear stories about what went on in there. Last time I was by there, in the late 80s, it was gone.
Menino rivaled the worst of the Chicago politicians in terms of corruption.
Long, long ago Simco's on the bridge was a favorite. They had great foot long hot dogs. A real treat after a night of drinking. This was before the mass relocation of blacks from the south into Boston. Then, the whole area burned down. Now it's a killing zone. Amazingly, Simco's is still there.
It’s a shame. You can’t be in close proximity to a cancerous tumor like Harvard and not be contaminated.
Once upon a time there was the G&G Deli, Mickey's Billiards and Barney's Pool Room. Great hangouts.
That poor little boy.
Roslindale/W Roxbury here ... what is this .... old home week ?
Never knew so many fellow transplants hung out here in Jim's living room
I left in '76 and never REALLY new Mattapan
That is an excellent book on neighborhood redlining and the toxic mix of a government handout program, corrupt banks, and shady R/E agents.
Sure do. I lived in Dorchester until I was 31. I commuted to Boston College for four years and was frequently stopped at the traffic light at Morton St. and Blue Hill Ave. admiring the 1930’s look of the Old Brown Jug sign. Just last week I was talking with people at work about it, wondering whatever happened to it when that bucket of blood was sold.
By 1976 you knew all there is to know about Mattapan. Sadly, it hasn’t improved much.
Even now I have a visceral hatred of the 1970s (and current) liberal politicians and their “progressive” suburban allies and the Boston Globe who contributed to the permanent destruction of this city. I’d wager to guess that as soon as wetbrain Marty Walsh is finished his “revisions” of the city, we will see the first quota hire mayor. Then, just flush...
Don't know how much you know about Boston but, having lived here all my life,I put it to you that those *around* Mumbles (a nickname given by Howie Carr,a Boston columnist) were corrupt but Mumbles himself was just thick as a bag of rocks.Too stupid to be "corrupt"...too stupid to know that his posse was corrupt.
Is "rough" code for a certain demographic? < /sarc >
For those who don’t know, Mattapan is a sh*t hole.
