Despite the fact I live in California and I have many friends and family who are progressive, I know of no one who cares for Islam at all. None. All of us know some individual Muslims who are fine people, of the sorts you would want to work with or play softball with, etc, but that fools no one. That may not agree with the preconceptions of some folks here, who seem to see a Mohammadian loving hypocrite behind every person who doesn’t belong to the tea party, but I know what I experience. Marxists I know, Lots of Wiccans, and Atheists aplenty. Not a single damned one of them would welcome Sharia any more than they would any other form of monotheistic based theocratic law. Not a single one isn’t disgusted by crap like FGM, honor killings and Jihad.
Stupidly lumping everyone who isn’t an evangelical Christian constitutionalist conservative into some category of ‘Islam loving Sharia seeking dupe’ is not only counterfactual but counterproductive. I don’t care what anyone tells me, I know what I see and hear. The Atheists I know (quite a few) loath the Religion of Piss as much if not more than any member of Assemblies of God or SBC. Simplistic reductionism plays right into the enemy;s hands.
