Sun rises at 11am and sets at 2:30pm
A remote Omani village located nearly 2,000 metres above sea level has one of the shortest days in the world, not exceeding 3.5 hours.
Newspapers in Oman and other Gulf countries said the sun rises in Wekan around 11am and sets about 2.30pm.
The village, accessible by donkeys, horses and four-wheel vehicles, is situated in the Northern Al-Batinah province, nearly 150km from the capital Muscat.
The Saudi daily Ajel said the village has one of the shortest fasting times in the world but it was not clear whether the Wekanians follow that time in fasting.
I read years ago that the definition of morning was when they could distinguish a white thread from a black thread, and evening was when they could not distinguish the difference.
But then that may have changed.
It sounds like a technicality for their fasting requirements if observed there.
It's pretty close to the equator, like Saudi Arabia and other countries around there, just higher altitude. That amount of sunlight combined with some shade might be enough for the plants there, guess it has to be.
Interesting though. All I can personally relate it to are the mountains on the Wyoming-Utah border, so hot and dry coming down into Salt Lake City.
Our farm is in a box “canyon” with steep hills west and east so our days there are noticably shorter than everyone else’s.... though not this extreme as our hills are not as tall nor our valley as deep.
We’re also cooler in the summer than the folks around us and facing south , with a third hill to our north, are warmer in the winter.
I imagine in Oman a short day is a real blessing from the heat.
The technical method of knowing when to fast is when you can no longer tell the difference of color between a white thread and a black thread.
It wasn’t called “Bloody Harlan” for nothing.
Ouray, Colorado, is in a box canyon. The direct sunlight must be rather short there, also.
Correct.
Islam seems to get into every aspect of a believers life.
Not leaving out much for options for true believers. -Tom

YUSUFALI: Permitted to you, on the night of the fasts, is the approach to your wives. They are your garments and ye are their garments. Allah knoweth what ye used to do secretly among yourselves; but He turned to you and forgave you; so now associate with them, and seek what Allah Hath ordained for you, and eat and drink, until the white thread of dawn appear to you distinct from its black thread; then complete your fast Till the night appears; but do not associate with your wives while ye are in retreat in the mosques. Those are Limits (set by) Allah: Approach not nigh thereto. Thus doth Allah make clear His Signs to men: that they may learn self-restraint.
So glad I wasn’t born into a Mohammadan family.
