Fox apologizes for 'X-Men' ads showing a strangled Jennifer Lawrence 4 months later

Fox has apologized for promoting X-Men: Apocalypse with images of Jennifer Lawrence's character Mystique being strangled by Oscar Isaac's Apocalypse with the tagline: "Only the strong will survive."

"In our enthusiasm to show the villainy of the character Apocalypse we didn't immediately recognize the upsetting connotation of this image in print form," Fox said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter Friday.

...

New York blogger EV Grieve posted a photo of the poster last month above a subway station in Manhattan that had been covered with eight pieces of paper that read: "This violence in my kid's face is not okay.”

Mashable has reached out to Fox for a comment.

Jennifer didn’t seem to mind. She’s pretty tough. She knows it’s all theater. In that sort of movie, her charecter was probably able to turn the tables anyway, and put this ‘man’ under unrelenting pressure.

I'm sure Obama likes the poster, it's an advertisement for women to join the military and fight like the boys do. What could go wrong?

Speaking of things that are not okay for kids, what about the Washington state school system’s recent decision to teach kids about “gender identity”? Frankly, I don’t want my kids at any age learning about transvestites or men who intentionally get surgically mutilated.

Obama’s legacy is cultural rot. Just about any of the Obama rot is far more offensive than a movie still showing a woman being strangled in such a way that you know she is about to break free.

This whole thing has the feel of a PR stunt to gin up the buzz of the movie. Provoke faux outrage. Get lots of free press for the movie.

I remember the old cartoons where people or cartoon animals were often getting bopped on the heads by frying pans etc.

The kids who saw them survived.

Indeed. Somehow, I survived and turned out okay after seeing any amount of abuse heaped on that poor coyote who was just trying to catch himself a tasty (and annoying) meal. It's a wonder the unfortunate beast survived all of that violence, and amazing he didn't starve to death.

I'm still rooting for him to catch the roadrunner.

I’m glad you said that. I thought I was the only kid who sympathized with Wile E. Coyote:)

It’s not like she’s a black girl getting choked.

I haven’t gone to a superhero movie since they killed off Spiderman’s girlfriend in Spiderman 2. I found it traumatic. Eff em. They’re blockheads, they don’t understand people’s sensibiliities.

Yes, sarcasm...just kidding about the Batman vs Superman movie. Haven’t seen it yet, but will eventually.

Also, speaking of bad guys turning good. I caught the last 10 minutes or so of a recent Thor movie on TV, and “former bad guy” Loki actually helped his brother Thor beat the bad guys. Don’t know the name of the movie. Up to then, Loki had been a very bad guy.

I’m halfway thru “Badman”. Funny movie. Thanks.

Lawrence has had a great career playing mythical, or mentally deranged characters. In real life she has gone overboard bagging on her conservative upbringing.

OK.
But I have no idea what the controversy is.
Is it the name Jennifer Lawrence? Has there been a real life strangling victim with the same name?

Is it assumed that the entire planet has turned into snowflakes?
Anxiety producing movie screaming for a safe place?

What?

Why not just not go to see the movie?
I don't get it.
Why was it OK 4 months ago but not today?

I am totally baffled.

Well, the spelling on that poster would make a third grader blush.

Maybe grammar nazis have a useful function.

Would there have been an outcry if, say, Professor X were being choked? Or Beast? Or Cyclops?

I thought the goal was equality.

It’s a massive blue man choking a blue girl. I guess maybe nightcrawler and beast could protest (both being blue as well) but that’s about it.

Geek chat time

In the Age of Apocalypse comic book story, Angel was turned into one of Apocalypses henchmen.

They do only win by working together using their individual powers

Apocalypse stated he could not be everywhere at once (hence his need for possessing Xavier) so his henchmen served two purposes: enforce Apocalypses will as ruler and cto protect him during his body transferrance

The death of Gwen Stacy story played out just about the same in the comics - about 43 years ago.
