Anything you expose to the Internet in any way is going to have hacking attempts.

You cannot turn on a mail server without attempts to hijack it for a spam relay.

You cannot turn on a webserver without continuous probes to determine the type of product being used, and follow-ups with specific types of attacks designed to exploit known vulnerabilities.

It’s just the nature of the beast. In this particular case, we know the server was exposed to the Internet with an exposed web portal for a specific Microsoft product and version with known, exploitable vulnerabilities and presumably a server that announced itself as such in response to automated requests.

So when Schiff says “a couple of unsuccessful hack attempts”, it’s not even possible for that to be correct. That would be average for a given half-hour for anything hooked up to the network at all... never mind a high value target.
