Trump's response was a single tweet that said that Cruz's issues with the Enquirer were his and his alone. He did not run with it.

I believe Trump understands those things better than Democrats, or most other folks, do, which is a big part of where he is in the campaign. Every time it looks as if he is stepping into a trap the on who set the trap gets caught in its jaws.
