The problem is that most of the NBA stars barely do 1 year of college now before jumping to the pros. they are just putting in the mandatory 8 months now required by the NBA before a player is eligible for the draft. At one point you could jump directly to the pros from high school as was the case with Kobe and Lebron.
That only is true for a top level talent. This clown was not one of those.
