A 45-year-old man has been charged with a hate crime after allegedly using a racial epithet while stabbing another man on the Washington Street Bridge late Sunday.
Todd Light was going home Sunday night, and stopped on the bridge to look at the Chicago River, when a man approached him, demanded his wallet, and stabbed him multiple times in the abdomen.
Light fought back, and held down his attacker until police arrived.
I hit him until he dropped the knife and stopped trying to kill me, because I didnt want to get stabbed again, he told CBS 2s Brad Edwards.

The data at heyjackass.com point out that the violence is largely confined to a single population and is concentrated in a few neighborhoods. It rarely spills into the rest of the city.
Chicago is clean and safe in 90% of the remaining areas; the food, museums, parks and architecture are first class. It's an amazing city.
Its not skin color, its the attitude taught to them by adults in their ethnicity. I happen to have a bi racial son. He is as straight arrow conservative as they come. He speaks correctly without slurring his words; he is magna cum laude with a degree in mathematics and serves as a staff sgt in the air force as well as honor guard. Because I did not lower my standards nor my expectations of him for one second.
That and we left the inner city school district when he was entering 2nd grade.
