Wow. A once great comedian that I used to idolize. Yet another bit of my childhood innocence gone forever.
Innocent until proven guilty.
Bill Cosby made a tactical mistake - he was active in just the wrong time. Generations of great entertainers prior to him had made great names for themselves, yet they were living a double life, some of which was not known until they were gone, some of which there are only rumors but no solid reliable evidence. But in their lifetimes, they escaped scrutiny, because of a curtain raised around their personal activities, and some much stronger libel laws in the past. If you were going to bring charges, you better be pretty sure of your facts, and could prove the evidence was overwhelming.
No more. Now, if the charges are even hinted at, the outcry is taken up, and the whole whooping crowd descends on the hapless target, whether the evidence is relevant or not. Bill Clinton, the Slick One, had a good deal of media Teflon afforded for his protection. Bill Cosby was not fortunate enough to gain the good graces of the mainstream press to protect him against the charges hinted at.
But once you have stripped away this protection for Bill Cosby, how long can the Power Couple endure with renewed scrutiny and a similar standard applied to them?
Like snow banks in the spring rains....
