James Hitchcliffe recorded a four-lap average of almost 231 mph to take the pole position for the 100th running of the Indy 500. James suffered a terrible accident into the outside wall coming out of a corner hitting with the right-front tire. A suspension piece pierced the chassis and into James' right upper thigh.
I saw the 2001 Indy 500. The cars go by so fast it is hard to identify which car it is. In 2001 Danny Ongias had a terrible crash in turn 3.

The Indy 500 I went to was 1981, n0t 2001. Time flies I guess.
Glad he recovered. His team owner is former Indy car racer Sam Schmidt who had a crash at Walt Disney World Speedway that left him paralyzed.

I was on the other side of the fence in a school bus changing out of band uniform into street close. Took awhile to want to go back. When I did sat twice in the good seats behind the pits.

He was put in Scotty Braytons’ Pole sitting car next to Tony Stewart in 1997,,,
Scotty died at the track tire testing after winning the Pole postion.
