One favorite bit of naughty humor was when Martin as Tut was asked what the curse of King Tut was, and he responded, “Sonovab*tch!”
Heh, I saw that when it happened! SNL!
This was April 22, 1978, perhaps the greatest SNL episode in the history of the SNL show. This was the episode where the Blues Brothers were the musical guest and Steve Martin was the host.
This was Steve Martin at the very height of his extraordinary fame. During the 1978-1979 period, Steve Martin was the top entertainer in the business. For a short time, he was bigger than The Beatles and bigger than Elvis. Then he did "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid." He certainly made King Tut a household name.
Forever more, King Tut will be linked with Steve Martin. Every time I hear King Tut mentioned, the opening bars of "King Tut" pop into my head and I marvel that he gave his life for tourism and had a huge impact in late 20th Century pop culture.
