But really?? Cockpits are open for kids to chat with pilots??? Was this written in the 1980s? If this is true, they might as well stop scanning and checking us before boarding.

My grandparents flew out west from Virginia back then and their dog spent most of the trip in the cockpit with the pilots eating cookies with them that another passenger brought on and gave them.
That said, when I left Altus AFB for Korea, the local was a twin engine puddle jumper to get me to a real airport. The pilot, knowing I was military, invited me to sit in the copilot seat (short enough hop that it didn't require a copilot). Made for an enjoyable ride vs. sitting in the cramped back area with shoulder against fuselage and knees under chin....
If there are no muzzies on board, it is probably safe.
