In the "good old days" there were these things called newspapers and journals of opinion. Neocons could make a living submitting articles to these organs, gain some notoriety, and then make more money writing books, making clever speeches, etc.

But now that newspapers, magazines, and journals are going the way of the Comintern, there's no more gravy train for neocons. Their only hope of drawing a salary and maintaining relevance is to be part of some administration.

Maybe this is why people like Kristol are so adamantly opposed to Trump and trying to sidle up to the likes of Hildebeest.
