The time to develop the equations is before the conference.
On the way to the conference, at least I rehearse the talk.
I have my talk on powerpoint slides printed out on 8.5 x 11 paper, along with the title page.

If your talk is nothing but hairy equations, especially ones hastily thrown together at the last minute, conference organizers will tell you that your talk is boring.

Yes, I think the guy was trying to start an incident. At the very least he was unprepared.

Geeze! I do math for **fun** . I am leaving for Texas tomorrow for 6 weeks on the beach and plan to thoroughly review all the problems in an engineering level physics book. I do that for personal entertainment. Last time I was on the beach I completely revisited Trigonometry and Geometry. Next time I fly I better leave my calculator, compass, and ruler in my check-in bag.

I suspect that there are a lot of details that may have been omitted. I, too always rehearse any speeches that I am going to give and you raise valuable points and steps to be taken to ensure that your presentation is well received. Surely the press wouldn’t throw together a story without all the facts. /s/
