My first engineering job out of college was in Deer Park. Used to be an industrial town, all that is gone now, no more light manufacturing, just a New York State of mind. If there was ever an institution more effective at deindustrialization than the New York State government, it is New York City’s.
The NJ government has done a nice job of chasing our industry away as well; this is the post-industrialization “rust-belt”, with the descendants of those industrial workers running amuck.
Trump’s appeal is that people are desperately hoping to return us to those days; I don’t know whether or not he can deliver, but he seems determined to try. This transition of industry/commerce from the overtaxed, over-regulated West to the Third World is simply happening too quickly...
