It is not illegal to have the Prez. and VP from the same state. It’s just that the electors in the electoral college from that state cannot cast their votes for both the Pres. and VP candidates in that situation. They would cast their votes for the Pres. and have to cast their VP votes for someone not on the ticket. This could, if both came from a large state, result in a Prez. from one party and a VP from the other. But, if without the votes of the electors from the state in question being counted, the VP still gets a majority of electors, it is in fact legal to have a Pres. and VP from the same state.
