Yes, Dobermans can be like that, but they can also be very friendly. Shepherds are similar.

My lady Shepherd is the kindest, gentlest most submissive dog, but she also takes guarding the house very seriously. But if we get set upon by another dog while walking, I’m the one who has to do the fighting while she tries to run away. I’m on my own.

Other shepherds are incredibly fierce and can be quite scary. I’ve met a few of those in my life. Definitely a dog that needs to be respected.

But look I can’t fault anyone for rescuing dogs that needs rescuing. Thank you for doing that.

That’s kind of you to say. I can’t visit a shelter or PetCo on a Saturday (adoption day) because I would bring them all home. My husband is the only thing standing between me and the title ‘crazy dog lady’.

These days I prefer my dogs to other humans :)

My son rescued a shepherd mix 2+ years ago. Very sweet disposition, but she and I like to play roughly. Every now and then, she'll draw blood when she nips me on my hand or arm. When I react like I'm hurt, it's like saying a magic word, and she pulls back.

We were playing last weekend, and my 5 YO grandson joined in. She was playful with him, too, but not as rough as with me. He was able to handle it, his dad has a huge Labrador, probably 125+ lbs.

There is no doubt she would protect us if the need arose. I need to walk her more, though. She weighs 90+ lbs, though she should weigh 65. My sons "promised" me they would do all that...we know how that turned out.

use to have a neighbor that owned a oversize white Shepard. He met everyone at the door and got the smell test then go to his bed to nap...You had to know how to approach this dog. Yet once you passed the smell test, he was a sweet dog. They came home one night and found blood over the kitchen and living room. The side door was broken into. Lots of blood but the dog was sleeping in his bed, he also had some blood on him, it wasn't his. Dog never attempted to leave the house, but a couple or just one teen wont be returning to that house........Neighbors were all giving the owners the high 5. A few neighbors had been broken into.
