"She was kinda dumb, and kinda smart"...my 30 year old daughter just shakes her head when she hears that line.

Here’s another take on the song - warning, vulgar language...

I find “Honey” to be an excessively dark and violent tale of drug abuse and crime. The tree in question is probably marijuana or coca. The laughter, the crying and the auto accident were probably the result of the psychotropic effects of the narcotics. Eventually, Honey was killed in a fight with a motorcycle gang.

Bob Shane of the Kingston Trio released this song first and without any promotion it went nowhere. His version is well done and every bit as well as Goldsboro's version. It made airplay with Shane's version but tanked quickly. Goldsboro rereleased his version a few months later and it was his biggest hit. Goldsboro was an excellent performer and musician. Keith Richards in his autobiography credits Goldsboro with showing him open tunings of the guitar and how to use them.

This is one of those songs that is so easily severely down graded when messing with the original formula. The original version is so much better.

I like Goldboro’s Summer, the First Time. It’s basically the musical version of Summer of ‘42.

I remember this song when it came out. So sad I can’t listen to it.

Goldsboro's Easter Egg Mornin' has been a holiday staple for years.
