bring up a command window and type MSConfig

Turn off anything in startup that doesn’t need to be run on startup, and turn off any services that you don’t use (services not from MS should be looked at, in particular).

Then reboot. In the worst case it should speed up your system slightly and reduce the number of potential conflicts.
