The priests lead us in almost every Mass to pray for the Pope. I can tell they are nervous; agitated by what’s transpired out of Rome the last couple of years.
Also, I see some who are weak in the Faith to begin with who are using the rhetoric coming out of the Vatican as an excuse for doing whatever they want - which mostly is counter to traditional Church teaching.
There are some who are turned off by ‘fire and brimstone’ teaching, but look at the fruits of going in the other direction! The Catholics of yesteryear are not the Catholics of today (largely). I see almost no Nuns anymore; they are missed, as they enjoy a very special role and complete the Church, imo.
Upon this rock, Jesus built his Church with St. Peter as the first Pope, and the gates of hell shall not overcome it. I stand on that.
What you are seeing, I think, has a positive side: the death throes of ultramontanism.
Since the 1800s there has been this creeping idea—pious yes, but also dangerous—that the Pope is an autocrat who can do pretty much what he likes. So St. Pius X gutted the Roman Breviary. Pius XII reorganized Holy Week, and of course Paul VI handed the entire Mass of the Ages and calendar to a panel of experts to be cut apart and pasted back together.
We the laity have become passive, submissive, and too eager to simply accept the diktats of our ecclesiastical superiors even when they are supremely ill-advised and even detrimental to the faith. When the Novus Ordo was promulgated we should have told Paul VI to stuff it.
Let our priests be wary. Let their agitation turn to steely resolve to not see the faith watered down by any hierarch, be he the Pope himself.
Given most of what passes for nuns nowadays, I am not sure we need more of them. These are NOT our grandparents' nuns who faithfully taught in our parochial schools the doctrines of the Faith and, despite often having merely a high school diploma, kept Catholic school kids two years academically ahead of the inmates of gummint skewels, not an army of Mother Teresas caring for the wretched of the earth, not even social worker nuns counseling observance by the laity of their marriage vows.
Today's nun is more highly edumakated (brainwashed by the left), likely a feminazi, cannot be bothered conveying their faith (?), if any, to a new generation of children, all wrapped up in the glory of propagandizing in favor of communist governments wherever possible, peace at any price, equality of everything, gun confiscation, "rampaging progressivism on a field of vomit, and every other abomination known to man, woman or beast.
Yes, there are a few decent orders of traditional nuns, each and every member a heroine of the Faith, but they are few and far between.
If we want real nuns, we have to start all over again, raise our daughters to consider vocations, absolutely suppress the LCWR and many leftwing orders. When we have a Catholic pope again, he should renew the rigorous investigation by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith of American nuns this time with public excommunications.
While God expects each of us to do our respective parts with the talents he gave us, the gates of hell shall indeed not prevail against it. We have that on the very highest Authority.
