JERSEY CITY -- A traffic stop near the Holland Tunnel yesterday evening lead to the recovery of a shotgun and nearly 200 rounds of ammunition, a police spokesman said.
At about 6:30 p.m., a police officer saw a blue plastic drum in the back up a pickup truck that had just passed through the Holland Tunnel toll plaza. The officer stopped the vehicle driven by a Pennsylvanian man to make sure there were no hazardous materials in the drum, Port Authority spokesman Joe Pentangelo said.
Police asked the driver Marlon Murphy, 45, of Easton, if there were any weapons in the back of his truck. Murphy told the officer there was a shotgun in the barrel, Pentangelo said.

The Port Authority is neither New York or New Jersey, it is its own jurisdiction, the cops are Port Authority Cops, the governors of New York and New Jersey are co-governors of the Port Authority.
But he never made it into New York. He was caught in the Port Authority on the New Jersey side.
I see these big giant “scanners” that are installed on all the crossings going into New York. So I have a feeling they can “see through” things as see guns, weapons, explosives, or whatever. But I don’t know, I am just guessing
Not the best idea by a long shot, no doubt about it.
FWIW I meant ‘probable cause’ but that doesn’t affect your
point in any way.
Same. (Well, in a backpack - I'm cheap).
Sounds to me like the guy would be legal. Kept the firearm out of the passenger compartment. But also not just leaving it out in the open in his pickup bed. Maybe they have a law saying that the ammo and firearm need to be stored separately?
Wow. Wouldn’t that be an arsenal?
“Maybe they have a law saying that the ammo and firearm need to be stored separately?”
I believe that is the case here in NJ; I don’t know about NY.
“...who could produce no documentation for the shotgun...”
Um, no officer. I do not have the receipt for this firearm on me at the moment. It was my dad’s gun, which was passed down to him by his dad.
I suppose in NJ that you have to register every gun?
“But I don’t live in New Jersey! And I wasn’t going to shoot it in New Jersey. I didn’t even STOP in New Jersey!!! And what part about ‘shall not infringe’ don’t you understand!!!???”
I’m guessing this guy can’t afford the lawyers the gay people hired to push for a national marriage law, but I would imagine that the same argument could be made for a national right-to-carry law.
BTW - years ago I lived in NJ. Some 18-year old helped his girlfriend’s family move and put the bb-gun behind his truck bench seat. He found it a few days later and he shot at street signs. One richocetted and hit a woman in the leg and she called the police.
He was given a mandatory sentence of something like 5 to 10 years. After spending almost a year in prison the governor pardoned him. (This would have been in the early 90’s).
>> Its NJ.
And sadly psychotic gun law.
The “couldn’t produce paperwork” story is very curious.
Either he was covered by FOPA, or he wasn’t. If he was, there’s no “paperwork” needed - even NJSP have a statement on their website instructing State Police about their obligations under FOPA.
Interestingly, NYS does not recognize FOPA other than to say that you are free to use it as a defense at yiur trial AFTER arrest, jail or bail, and confiscation. I don’t know how they get away with that.
“a shotgun and nearly 200 rounds of ammunition”?
Oh my.
In most southern homes you can find a shotgun and usually many times more than 200 rounds for ammo for it.
Why only 200 rounds. I have 600 in my truck. WTF
If he only had a copy of a Cabela's catalog in the cab they would have hauled him off for at least 5 years.
200 rounds; hell that’s only 8 boxes of shells. I always throw at least a case of shells in the truck when ever I am going quail, dove, or chukar hunting.
You might have to share with your fellow hunters, or just have one of those days when you can’t hit a B-52 at ten feet.
...and now for something in a slightly related story. The State of Mississippi just passed ‘Constitutional Carry’!!!
You never know! That barrel could have contained captured rain water!
Oh the horror!!!
Our ancestors were worried about the rain gods
we have to worry about the rain cops! lol
