I hope that’s the case. He seemed very bitter last I heard him.

Animosity at Christ is nothing new. It’s as old as “He eats and drinks with gluttons and drunkards.”
A God of grace is going to get such opprobrium from people who are still on the “earn or burn” wavelength.
And frankly, modern Christians can get on that wavelength too, making a mockery out of what they claim to believe from the bible. The unbeliever is especially sensitive to this.
