Well, he is right even if it is unfashionable to agree with him. We do have some severe problems but they are of our own making. We burden our industries with the world’s highest taxation and the costliest regulation. Add to that our insistence on keeping able bodied citizens from working and producing by paying high rates of free money that makes it more sensible in the short run for millions to stay home and suck up subsidies. A high tariff regime would, indeed, reduce imports a lot but it would reduce exports at the same time and drive more American businesses offshore so that they could compete in the world.
