next time you give it a loving pat.
think about all the great dog lovers here on FR.
great story both of them...
I would be pissed if my dogs did not show the same amount of affection
I visit him often, every summer and I will definitely give him a pet for all the FR dog people.
I’ve done so since my mid-teens.
It never fails to choke me up, especially the little things that the kids leave for him, like the toy dog in the first photo.
Rollo is everyone’s faithful dog.

>>> I would be pissed if my dogs did not show the same amount of affection
Well... It’s romantic in theory. In reality, crippling for the poor dog. My dominant pup has “gone on strike” on occasions that she’s been separated from me for more than the usual work + round trip. Trusted others in the home (or neighbors dog-sitting her & the other dog) have a hard time just getting her in/outside to relieve herself. She’s dispirited in my absence, withdraws completely. Some feebleness of mind & body play a part in this, as she wasn’t always so psychologically dependent on me.
So I’m obligated to outlive her (presumably doable) but also must plan outings carefully or altogether avoid certain activities. The other dog has health issues that preclude boarding or entrusting her to someone who’s not used to her routine, but emotionally she’s normal & causes no grief to me or my housemate. As the only worker & usual shopper/ errand runner in my household, it’s a logistical pain in the butt sometimes. I do right by her in order to return her loyalty as best I can, but “crippling” really is the best word to describe her situation. I never wanted this for my sweet angel.
I truly grieve the dogs who are subjects of such stories.
