Longtime fans have speculated for years, but a producer of the upcoming Xena: Warrior Princess reboot has confirmed: Xena is gay in the new series.
In a post on Tumblr, the reboots screenwriter and executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach confirmed that Xena (played in the 90s by Lucy Lawless) would finally fully explore the not-so-subtle lesbian relationship she had with her sidekick Gabrielle (played in the original series by Renee OConnor).
[T]here is no reason to bring back Xena if it is not there for the purpose of fully exploring a relationship that could only be shown subtextually in first-run syndication in the 1990s, Grillo-Marxuach wrote. [I]t will also express my view of the world which is only further informed by what is happening right now and is not too difficult to know what that is if you do some digging.
The original series, which ran for six seasons between 1995 and 2001, featured plenty of tender moments between its two female co-leads.
In a 2003 interview with Lesbian News, Lawless said that despite never having been explicitly mentioned on the show, her character was definitely gay, and the series final scene was proof.
There was always a Well, she might be or she might not be but when there was that drip of water passing between their lips in the very final scene, that cemented it for me, Lawless said then. Now it wasnt just that Xena was bisexual and kinda liked her gal pal and they kind of fooled around sometimes, it was Nope, theyre married, man.
Grillo-Marxuachs Tumblr post came in response to a fan who had asked whether the lesbian character on one of the producers other TV shows, The 100, had influenced the writing process on Xena.

You must be thinking the fourth duck...
(Huey, Louie, Dewey, and Screwy.)
Sure, a couple of skinny ones for them to ooh and aah over.
Just for the record, I wanted to *bleep* both of them! :)
Another very bad idea from producers trying to push the LBGT agenda down everyoneâs throats. I predict a flop that no one watches â if it even goes into production.
The Cop was the only one who wasn’t gay.
ha ha! Yes, Screwy is my favourite!
Gabrielle was by far better looking than Xena.
It’s been a long time. I hate when that happens.
Victor Willis (the Policeman) and Glenn Hughes (the Biker) were straight while Felipe Rose (the American Indian), Randy Jones (the Cowboy), David Hodo (the Construction Worker), and Alex Briley (the Military Man) were gay.
But they're usually wrong about stuff. The group went on for a while and there were a lot of other members down through the years who may or may not have been homosexual.
As kids, we didn't like them, but we assumed all disco was "gay". America was surprisingly accepting of the group. For one thing, the songs were as much (or more) a joke about homosexuals as anything positive. For another, the topic was less politicized back then. It was part of how people lived in San Francisco or Manhattan and didn't have anything to do with how things were in the rest of the country.
Yes, back then people were ok with gays as long as they were non-threatening, like Paul Lynde or Rip Taylor.
I’m guessing this will bomb, like the new “ghostbusters”
