Vote for the most conservative who can win is still the best advice WFB Jr gave us.
If the GOP picks a real RINO loser I would go with the independent Trump.
The Democrat is, of course, to not be considered.
‘Fair and square, that’s how Conventions work.’
And who selects these delegates? Who will respect their votes if Trump actually has 53% of the popular support that day?
Do you expect party unity after such an event?
Do you expect an energized base?
I agree that Trump is provocative.
Absolutely.
But I am kind of hoping that grownups will unite the party. The smart ones, such as Cruz, and such as people here on this forum. Maybe I’m asking too much.
‘If the GOP picks a real RINO loser I would go with the independent Trump.’
Glad to hear that.
And if the GOP ends up with Cruz through delegates rather than pop-vote, no matter how angry that might make me, I will be checking the polling stats to see who the top Anti-Hillary candidate is.
Hate to rely on polls, but what else would work better at the moment?
But Cruz now has media and establishment support and a bunch of insider caucus delegates. Watch tv and see the people that hate Cruz now championing him. That’s not public support that’s faux support.
That conservatives know so little about the nuts and bolts of party organizations starting at the lowest level is a pretty clear indication that they don’t participate.
Failing to participate has brought us to this disastrous place.
No strongman can compensate for citizens who won’t participate in their own self-government.
Depends on how desperate the establishment is to stay on the government gravy train.
After borrowing 19 trillion dollars to play bigshots it appears to be a serious addiction for them.
And like all addicts you hit bottom then recover or perish.
Hopefully the bottom is constitutional or we all die.
Delegates might be the ‘rules’, but rules don’t campaign for you.
‘That conservatives know so little about the nuts and bolts of party organizations starting at the lowest level is a pretty clear indication that they dont participate.’
Can you explain to me in less than a thousand words how each state selects delegates?
How many people know that kind of stuff?
I’m not even sure Cruz knows. He hasn’t been in DC long enough. He probably got tips from the Bush team.
re: 53% of popular republican support
Trump has 30 or 40% of primary vote. About 1/4 of Trump voters (10% of the total) are Democrat cross-overs. So Trump has no where close to 53% of R support.
Although Trump is not my first choice, I think it is a plus that Trump is bringing Democrats into the party. One of the major flaws of both the moderate GOPe and the conservative establishment (they are not the same) is that they have actively opposed to outreach to people who aren’t like them.
But 53% of Republicans? Get in touch with reality, please.
[53%!] Trump breaks 50% in national support for the first time [Cruz 22, Kasich 11, Rubio 10]

I assumed it was republican vote. But if it’s national support, so much the better!
I also expected a shift after the Chicago Rally.
[Shrug.]
If Trump fails to maintain popular support, either total or republican, then I would recommend he not run as an independent regardless of the convention.
Almost all delegates are democratically elected by participants in their state party, by (non-presidential preference) caucuses and conventions, or by appearing on primary ballots.
Then compare winning the nomination to winning a real estate deal. What is fair and what is unfair.
Is it fair for the seller to say he has another buyer when in fact he doesnt? Is it fair for the buyer to say that he will be happy to go elsewhere when in fact that is a lie?
Is it fair for 2 or 3 prospective buyers to suddenly form an alliance and submit a single bid? Is it fair for either side to change their story about where the money is coming from or where it will be going? Or to change their story from: My wife wants the deal to the deal is good for my taxes?
What percentage is from primary ballots?
I’ve never heard anyone in talk radio ever mention how to get involved with delegate selection.
There’s been a push to get conservative mayors and town counsel members. Nothing about delegates.
Murky territory.
Rules and laws — those things are for lawyers and DC insiders.
Popular support and energy. That’s what wins a general election.
Voting for the GOP nominee myself, whomever, however. Thinking our delicate 2016 sensibilities wouldn’t have survived political party conventions as they were for most of US history.
I have to agree that the GOP is really good at surviving and cashing in.
