When men whom you have every reason to believe are _some_ form of LEO are setting up heavily armed roadblocks at a time you KNOW police are out to capture you by darned near any means necessary (including barely legal), the fact that they may be lying to you and “are not instantly recognizable as who they claim to be” is a very minor point. He dared them to shoot, and gave them reason to; now he’s dead, go figure.

It’s not like there’s roving gangs of heavily-armed thugs setting up roadblocks in that area that _just_happened_ to encounter a “considered armed and extremely dangerous” suspect at that particular place & time.
He knew they were cops, they knew he knew, they didn’t care, their job was to stop him - NOT to cross every “i” and dot every “t” the way he wanted them to. He dared them to shoot, he gave them reason to shoot, they shot.

What I have seen is LaVoy sitting in the truck and sticking his head out of the window, jawing with the LEOs for minutes.
Why would he think he would get shot if he exited but wouldn't get shot if he sat there like a sitting duck? Especially since his partners had already surrendered and not been executed.
This scenario you're concocting just doesn't hold together if you give it any thought.
