A Rubio-Cruz Ticket Might Be the Only Way to Stop Trump
National Review ^ | 2/24/16 | Jonah Goldberg

As things stand, Donald Trump is the presumptive GOP nominee. That’s awful news, and depressing to contemplate. But terrible possibilities don’t become less terrible if we refuse to contemplate them. Rather, they become more likely.

If the two factions — which make up the overwhelming majority of Republican voters — could be unified, it might be enough to stop Trump.

What would the deal look like? A Rubio–Cruz ticket. Cruz won’t work at the top of the ticket for the simple reason that too many GOP quislings fear Cruz more than Trump. But a unity ticket — a la Reagan–Bush in 1980 — in the form of Los Hermanos Cubanos might just do the trick. There are real costs to such a deal (not least the fact that there are better general-election running mates for Rubio).

I notice they still put Rubio at the top. Little Marco has won exactly one state caucus (Minnesota) in a place which the GOP has carried in exactly ONE November (1972) in the last 59 years. Even Hawaii (where Marco came in 3rd yesterday) has a better track record of voting GOP in November.

Only way I see this happening is, making it totally open, that cruz will vp only for moments while he is nominated for the supremes. Then trump picks his vp of choice.
do it above board, cruz gets what he wants, they both go in with the agreement. Now if cruz does not get confirmed (not likely) but possible. Trump owes nothing. Cruz will not win the nomination otherwise.

Exactly.

Reality is that Cruz the candidate has officially vanished.

He is now just a pawn for the gope. Basically an empty shell, wanting to win by hook or crook, hoping that the gope takes pity on him after his supports held him up as the one that has “taken them on and beat them”.

It’s pretty pathetic because they will just use him to sop up some conservative votes, and if they can use him to get rid of Trump, they will indeed chuck him over the side for someone else.

Adding two losers together does produce a winner. :-)

Cruz has fallen in with the intellectually bankrupt anti-Trump “movement”. That support is fungible. He’ll be on a short Bush/Romney leash.

A week from today it is likely that the Cruz plus Rubio delegate count will be less than the Trump count.

If that is the case this article will seem more insane than it does today.

It’s too bad. I remember as a high school student in the 1960s being in awe of Mr. Buckley and all the NR stood for. Now it’s finite thanks to the idiots running- and writing for it.

No. Cruz is my first choice with Trump second, but I would choose Trump over Rubio/Cruz or over Cruz/Rubio.

The Gang of Eight betrayal was the first and final straw for Rubio. I don’t tolerate treason as well as the establishment does. Rubio is unacceptable in any administration position.

Interesting theory. I’m personally not that impressed by Cruz’ legal bonafides, nor am I convinced he will not be a NWO rubber stamp, but half of the Supremes are worse for sure.

And, it might secure this election against the wishes of the nomenklatura.

I smell the same thing that I smell from the GOPe and a 55 year old single cougar at a beach resort night club: desperation.

I grieve with you. It always made my day to find a new copy of NR in the mail box. Good times, when conservatism was not hyphenated, and Buckley was the leading spokesman for that conservatism.

Yes, but besides TALK, what has Ted Cruz actually done? Borrowed money from Goldman Sacks and Citigroup. Donated to charity like a Liberal. He is now funded by the Bushes, openly, whereas before he hid the connections. Wake up!
