And that ties in with the notion so many have, that their kids must go to college, preferably a prestigious private college, and the cost doesn’t matter.

But then, some come out with degrees in subjects which dont translate into job and career fields in our economy.

If you rack up college debt and end up working at Starbucks or Target, your college education didn’t qualify you for a career field which would give you a good paying job in order to pay off the debt.

Student loans may make sense if you study nursing,,accounting, various fields in the hard sciences. But they make no sense if you get a worthless degree in women’s studies, black studies, or English literature. If you get a degree in a field in which the degree won’t qualify you for a job or career, good luck.

I disagree with part of that assessment. My oldest daughter majored in English to my dismay, because long ago I too believed it to be worthless. However, many lawyers study English and become successful. My daughter got a degree in English from U.C. Berkeley, and immediately became successful first in the magazine business as an editor and writer, then in the tech/medical field because of her English degree. She's been pulling down big bucks well into the six figures. Another daughter with an unrelated degree also went into the publishing business as an editor. There's money to be made there.
