This is the one they probably mean, from Greek mythology: “a learned centaur who acted as teacher to Jason, Achilles, and many other heroes.”

I don’t know if that’s really much better than the boatman to hell.

The river Styx ferryman is called Charon not Chiron. It also got a moon of Pluto named that too.

In Greek mythology, Charon or Kharon (/ˈkɛərɒn/ or /ˈkɛərən/; Greek Χάρων) is the ferryman of Hades who carries souls of the newly deceased across the rivers Styx and Acheron that divided the world of the living from the world of the dead.
