For what it's worth, this is an advertised feature of VMware when running on Macs. I would imagine that it could work on a Linux/Windows host.

Probably the biggest problem would be the Windows Activation "feature". Your physical machine and your VM machine would look like two different computers, and would require two licenses. I'm not sure how "friendly" Windows is to constantly finding itself running on a computer with the "wrong' activation license.
