This is like saying DOS it too dumb down....

linux is just fine, and i don;t mind how much they dumb it down as long as i can right click and open a terminal from any GUI.

I do think a number of Linux distros are getting ‘too dumbed down’ to a point of becoming irritating to use. I find MacOS X preferable because it’s actually less idiot-proofed in many respects.

Yeah--that's one reason why I use Fedora with xfce.

Pretty much raw linux.

Yeah Ubuntu and Unity are annoying. Fedora has the right approach. If you want really old school there’s arch - compile everything from source. I ain’t gonna go there although I do like their wikis and I do build packages from source - it’s just not my default mode of operation.

The one thing that I think that gets repeatedly missed when people are debating distros is simply what’s the community like. Of course I google stuff and end up on Ubuntu pages but when you compare the Ubuntu forums to the Fedora ones it’s really stark how dumbed down the Ubuntu forums are for me.

So I don’t think the answer is that “Linux is too dumbed down”. It’s more - for me - don’t expect the same level of sophistication on an Ubuntu forum that you’ll get on a Fedora one (or Arch) and conversely don’t expect the same level of handholding on the others that you get in Ubuntu.

Great points about the communities.

If you want really old school there's arch - compile everything from source.

One of these days--if I ever find the time--I'm gonna go back and try LFS again.

Stereotypcial arrogant Linux jerk. Willing to spend more time showing what an ass he is than he is pointing someone to the answer.

Anyone producing Linux participation trophies yet?

I’m also completely fine with gnome-shell 3. Even at work where I’m forced to use Ubuntu I set it up to use gnome-shell and I can work very effectively with it.

I think I’m weird that way. For all the gnome haters that exist I find that their emphasis on simplicity, clarity, minimalism while at the same time trying to deliver on functionality and being “modern” are things that I appreciate.

I find that the folks that work on Gnome are really thoughtful about UX design. I could never be that person - building mockups, debating on how big buttons should be or where they live - but I’m glad that those people exist.

what are the best instructions for testing the hash? I’ve used a couple distros and never bothered to check.

Linux is for people who drive stick shifts and do their own maintenance. People not intimidated about getting under the hood.

Winders is for folks who want to turn the key and drive.

You make your choice up front.

Linux is either a good solution for you or it isn’t. For the vast majority of people it isn’t.

Gentoo or one of it’s sisters, similar in ways, to Arch (compile from source), but has a very active user community.

download the ISO, run a program that calculates the md5sum of that file, and compare the result, with the published result that appears online.

I've introduced a few folks to Linux in the past. I don't do it any more, because I'm not patient enough with folks. Most people don't have any idea how to really use MS-Windows, and they've been using it for years. Asking them to do anything different is an exercise in frustration for both you and them.It has nothing whatsoever with how easy or hard Linux is, because they don't actually understand computers regardless of what it's running. Frankly, I think most folks are better off with tablets.

If someone doesn’t want to help, they should stay off the help forums. Too many Linux jerks like to troll the discussions just some they can feel superior to someone. After all, they don’t build much self esteem living in their mother’s basement. And this guy sounds like he’s one.
