In 782, in the Massacre of Verden, Charles ordered the execution of 4,500 prisoners, apparently for their refusal to convert to Christianity.

It's a little more complicated than that. Look up "Massacre of Verden" on Wikipedia. It looks like this was a retaliation for breaking a truce and killing nobles and counts, not mere religious culling.

An entry for the year 782 in the Royal Frankish Annals records that, after Charlemagne lost two envoys, four counts, and around 20 nobles in battle with the Saxons, Charlemagne responded by massacring 4,500 rebelling Saxons near what is now Verden.

We still remember Charlemagne 1200 years later, his time was a net plus. I believe that Trump would like to be remembered in the same way.

---------- I will add that back then prisoners of war were not taken. Charles could not release these men because they would wage war on him. Trying to get them to convert to Christianity can be seen as a mercy because they would be allowed to live and return home. If Charles was a pagan and he defeated fellow pagans he would have killed every one of them after the battle or sold them into slavery.

Look, in medieval warfare, it was almost impossible to keep thousands of prisoners fed and healthy and non-combative. They didn’t have the means to take care of them, there was no Geneva Convention, and military leaders didn’t trust them. Henry 5 also executed thousands of prisoners (archers) at Agincourt. He gets condemned for it but I don’t know what else he could have done.
