I would not pay 1 cent for art that looks like a toddler would make.

Doesn’t do anything for me, but what the heck, if it’s his money, he can do as he pleases.

He would have been better off throwing his money in the furnace, in my opinion. At least it would have kept him warm. But, its his money, he can do what he wants with it.

Are you bothered by the price or that the pictures are abstract? Would $500 million for 2 Vermeers seems reasonable?

I'm sincere and not trying to snark. The reaction to art prices fascinates me.

...and how much did the artists get when they first sold the paintings?

I hear you. Abstract art is generally derided heavily around here. Mention Picasso and you’ll hear folks say stuff like their cat threw up something that looked like that or some such nonsense.

A few years ago I saw Ed Harris’ film on Jackson Pollock. Great movie by the way. I never could understand how Pollock’s work ended up commanding such prices.

Basically it looks like he threw different colors of paint on a canvas and there you are.

De Kooning was a contemporary and I cannot fathom the prices paid for just two works. Unreal.
