I read a history of British pilots in WWII and a number of them did not meet the height requirements, yet they became excellent pilots. One of them had lost his legs and flew with prosthetic legs.

Britain needed all the pilots they could get.

I think it comes down to they don’t need that many pilots so they can afford to be choosy.

The RAF pilot who flew without legs was Douglas Bader.
