Maybe they had thirty seven last time and are now down to fifteen! That would be a dearth.

I think the point the writer was making was that even the bad cars weren’t that bad. Not like in the 70s and 80s.

I think they were saying that few of the cars on the list are truly horrible and worthy of ridicule, unlike previous years.
