Happy Valentine's Day, a day on which we anglophones struggle under one of the worst burdens in a world which has otherwise blessed us: the word "love." The French for "love is amour, which rhymes with dozens of other useful words - toujours (always), jour (day), carrefour (crossroads), tambour (drum)... So the romantically inclined Quebecois lyricist can slough off a love ballad in minutes:

Romanian is the exception due to Slavic influence.

Dragostea = love from the old Slavonic, dragos. Iubirea = love comes from the Slavic root word lyubov which has the same meaning.

Even German is chock full of rhymes for Liebe, such as Bergwerksbetriebe (mining operations), Teesiebe (tea strainers) and Pferdediebe (horse thieves).

Don't diss the glove, Mark Steyn! It's mentioned in one of the most romantic songs ever, and they didn't even use it for rhyming with love. She's in italics:

We met at nine -- We met at eight,
I was on time -- No, you were late.
Ah, yes, I remember it well
We dined with friends -- We dined alone.
A tenor sang -- A baritone!
Ah, yes! I remember it well.

That dazzling April moon -- There was none that night
And the month was June
. That's right, that's right...
It warms my heart to know that you remember still the way you do --
Ah, yes...I remember it well.

How often I've thought of that Friday -- Monday! -- night
When we had our last rendezvous
And somehow I foolishly wondered if you might
By some chance be thinking of it too?

That carriage ride -- You walked me home
You lost a glove! I lost a comb!
Ah -- yes, I remember it well.
That brilliant sky -- We had some rain
Those Russian songs -- From sunny Spain!
Ah -- yes -- I remember it well --

You wore a gown of gold! I was all in blue.
Am I getting old? Oh, no, not you!
How strong you were, how young and gay
A prince of love in every way
...
Ah, yes...I remember it well.

-- Alan Jay Lerner, lyricist

Dragostea = love from the old Slavonic, dragos.

As in Dragostea din tei (Love from the linden tree)

Didn't say I liked it. But somehow I got it as an earworm in the past couple of days so I decided to share it. But I'm evil that way.

As far as songs in languages other than English, I found this one to be my favorite.

It’s well worth a listen but you should have a pair of noise reduction headphones or a good sound system.

Turn down the lights and grab a glass of wine.

You should recognize the original.

enjoy

Love Gigi, such a great show.

He didn’t mention one of my faces that uses “glove” to rhyme: “people will say we’re in love” from Oklahoma.

Then suddenly
Love!
It fell out of heaven
Love!
It gave me a shove...

Another good one where glove isn’t obtrusive or lame:

On my own,
When I wander through this wonderland alone,
Never knowing my right foot from my left
My hat from my glove
I’m too misty, and too much in love.

I wish people still wore hats and gloves as they used to. And wrote songs as they used to!
